  About The School  

School History

Putnam Middle School was built in 1961 by the Birmingham Board of Education.  The first plant consisted of an office, cafeteria, and thirteen instructional rooms.

The school was named in honor of William E. Putnam, who began his career with the Birmingham Board of Education in 1916 as a manual training instructor.  In 1922, Mr. Putnam became a statistician for the Board.  In 1924, he became Director of Research and in 1936 was named Director of Attendance and Research.  Mr. Putnam retires on June 30, 1949.  His life's accomplishments concluded on October 4, 1962.

The first principal was Edward E. Eubank, who served from 1961-1976.  The principals following Mr. Eubank were:

Dr. Jeanine  Bell                      2003-2004

Mr. Michael A. Scott                2004 to the Present

The school was originally built as an elementary school and was reorganized in 1980 to become

W.E. Putnam Middle Magnet School.
